The joys and challenges of adoptive family life: the views of adoptive parents

The seminar presents mothers’ and midwives’ experience of babies being removed at birth and considers the way in which a narrative understanding can offer valuable insight into a topic that has previously received minimal research attention, providing evidence to guide and inform midwifery and wider safeguarding practice. Evidence from the study has implications for research and development: firstly the process of grief for women who have their babies removed; secondly for midwifery models of care that enable midwives to focus on the dyad of mother and baby who are both vulnerable and may have safeguarding needs, rather than privileging one at the detriment of the other; thirdly the dissemination of the creative analytical process of reviewing verbal and visual data linked to the use of narrative methodology.

About the speaker: Wendy Marsh carried out her doctoral research at the University of Surrey. She has a midwifery background, specialising in safeguarding and child protection. Her research area is around the psychological and emotional needs of women, whose previous history warrants the removal of their infant at birth and that of the midwives providing care for them.
