About:

This two day training course seeks to improve the data skills of junior analysts in the public sector and academic researchers. Focussing on four key areas, each subject compliments the other areas to give a rounded knowledge of using data analytics for the public sector. All of the subject areas will include practical sessions and computer workshops. Upon completion you will leave with improved data analytics skills that are immediately actionable.

  • Applied statistics and forecasting.
  • Data mining and an introduction to Hadoop.
  • Spatial data linkage techniques (GIS) overview and foundation lecture.
  • Agent based modelling overview.

Audience:

This course is aimed at junior analysts with 1 to 5 years’ experience in data analysts. Attendees will require experience of working with Netlogo for the session on agent based modelling.

Trainers:

Applied statistics and forecasting
Marianna Marra earned a Ph.D. in Communication Science at the University of Salerno, Italy.  Her previous research focussed on the Social network analysis in organisation studies.  Her current research analyses the theme of knowledge transfer among business networks.

Data mining and an introduction to Hadoop.
Richard Skeggs has worked in data analytics for over 15 years in the financial industry and in higher education. He specialises in data mining techniques and is working towards completing a PhD in big data and advanced analytics.

Spatial data linkage techniques (GIS) overview
Andrew Lovett is Professor of Geography at the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. Since 1990 Andrew has been involved in a range of projects concerned with applications of GIS, landscape visualisation software and statistical techniques.

Agent based Modelling overview
Dr Abhijit Sengupta is a Lecturer in Business Economics at Essex Business School. He has extensive experience of working in private sector R&D with close connections to marketing and product development. Prior to joining Essex Business School, he worked as a Research Scientist in Unilever Research & Development.
